In the morning, visit Du fu Cottage where the movie story mainly happened. Then in the aftenoon and night take your time in Kuan and zhai lane.

The Thatched Cottage of Du fu is located by the side of the Huanhua Stream in Chengdu's western suburb. It was the residence of Du fu, the great poet of the Tang Dynasty when he took refuge in Chengdu.

Du Fu (712-70 AD), one of China's most famous poets, left hometown at the tender age of 20, becoming a court official at the former capital in Chang'an. Du Fu's civil service duties did not last long however, and he was captured by rebels and forced to flee the city for Chengdu after only a few years. It was in Chengdu, at this small and simple house, that Du Fu was inspired to write more than 200 poems which are regarded today as masterpieces of realist poetry.

Du fu's Thatched Cottage covers an area of 16 hectares. The Gate, the Screen Wall, the Lobby, the Hall of Verse History, and the Gong Bu Temple are lined one by one along the middle axis, flanked by corridors and other auxiliary buildings. The bronze statue of Du fu in the Hall of Verse History is broad-minded. The clay sculpture of Du fu was enshrined in the Gong Bu Temple is very lifelike. Among and between them are trees and bamboo groves, winding brooks and linking small bridges.

All these give the place an atmosphere of solemnity, meanwhile a sense of beauty and grace. Around the hones are bamboo fences and inside the fences are vegetable and herb plots, easily remind people of the scenes described in Du fu's poems. While taking a quiet walk in such a historical and cultural environment, visitors are apt to be brought back to the ancient times.

Zhai Lane historical & cultural district

It consists of Kuan Lane, Zhai Lane and Jing Lane of which there are three parallelly-arranged old style streets and courtyard houses. It is one of the three major historical & cultural conservation areas in Chengdu City, it is not only the last relic of the city pattern of "thousand-year-old young city" and the one-hundred-year original architectural structure of old Chengdu, but also the only existing copy in southern China from the lane (Hutong) culture and architectural style of northern China.

According to the plan, the control area is 479mu (1mu=1/15 hectare), in which the kernel conservation area covers 108mu. Based on the guiding principles of "conservation first, keeping old styles while repairing" and "former site and original form, reconstruction for old buildings that fell apart", up to now, the harmonious renovation of the peripheral buildings and architectural styles and features in the kernel conservation area has already been completed, including 23 courtyards built-up, 20 courtyards under construction, 2 courtyards to be built.

It is anticipated that, by the end of March, the reconstruction of 45 complete courtyard-style buildings have been accomplished, by the end of April, the paving and decoration of the landscape in the streets and on the square have been finished, and the commencement ceremony of the cultural street had been formally held in May.

Kuan and Zhai Lanes--leisurely life

Leisure is a kind of esthetics. Leisure is a carefree mood, which is a kind of aesthetics of us Chinese. Carefree mood, time on their hands, leisurely enjoying the sight. The leisure in Kuan Lane, is a process of seeking the leisure, decorating the leisure, enjoying the leisure, depicting the leisure, persuading the leisure to stay, and spreading the leisure. The leisure in Kuan Lane, permeates everywhere in Kuan Lane!

The old folks who are chatting, leisurely drinking their tea served in covered tea sets while half-laying on the bamboo chairs; the old ladies, with no teeth in their mouths, who are eating lotus leaf rice porridge, leisurely jiggling their palm-leaf fans, while sitting in the lonesome and long summer afternoon; the children who are singing children's songs, leisurely skipping and dancing over the rubber band while leaving school. Luxuriantly and emerald green alone in the tranquil years, on the grey brick stub walls,  leisurely crawled with the cirrus and wild flowers. All without exception embodies the leisure esthetics of Kuan Lane!

The leisure in Kuan Lane, is a kind of imaginable leisure. Those old tea houses, old workshops. "The reflection of green bamboos with the jade green lotus shines mutually in an old well, the grey smoke rises from the houses with blue bricks and small tiles". The dedicate door head, just as if it came from another world, pulls your thinking back to far away past years.

Dragon hall inns, courtyard houses with wooden floor storeys, deep and remote ancient trees, gates of the old houses, on the low fences crawled with luxuriantly green cirrus and wild roses; the extravagance of the city promptly recedes, time is just like floating living beings, slow and long.

Kuan and Zhai Lanes-slow life

Slowness is a kind of elegancy; slowness is the embodiment of leisure, delicacy, luxury and humanization. The esthetics of slowness, is the esthetics of taste; the esthetics of slowness, is the esthetics of experience; the esthetics of slowness, is the esthetics of ceremony.

Zhai Lane, nourishes esthetics of elegancy and slowness.

The slowness in Zhai Lane, is a kind of humanized esthetics that interfuses spiritual esthetics and practical esthetics! In Zhai Lane, one courtyard represents a kind of local conditions and customs. Mr. Lin Yutang once said: there should always be a garden in the residence, houses in the garden, a courtyard in the houses, trees in the courtyard, the sky over the trees, and a moon in the sky.

Although this is the dream about Chinese-style courtyard, it is actually the real situation of the courtyards in Zhai Lane. When you are standing at the faint entrance of the Zhai Lane with deep and remote courtyard and shade of ancient trees. When you try taking snapshots of the watching white cat under the eave; the lonely wild roses on the walls, the piquant ivy winding round the door head and stealthily creeping towards the grey walls and blue tiles, flourishing engraved beams and raised eaves. A kind of elegancy of slowness is gliding off your fingertips!

Dawdling in the lanes

The Chengdu people like saying "dawdling". For instance, going bar-hopping, pursuing girls, spending time in a teahouse. Dawdling is a kind of experience. Kuan and Zhai Lanes, Chengdu's Chengdu!

Sitting on the bamboo chair, looking up are the palace lanterns with flushed red, dangling between the black-varnished pillars. The tassel is hanging down, just as if a dancing girl gracefully swayed her flexible waist. The sunshine casts into the courtyard, moves slowly along flowering shrubs, eave columns and window muntins, with the light spots changing various forms on the ground. The maidenhair trees, wild roses, breeze and green shades isolate the hurly-burly, intense heat and irritability from outside.

Each time the evening comes, and the evening lights are lit, Zhai Lane will turn on another amiable face of "slowness"! Here, there are dazzling alternating shade and shadow, the circulation of ten li (1li=1/2 kilometer) beaded curtains, crowded noises from public houses, the musical sound of two-stringed instruments (huqin) for accompaniment of Sichuan opera, as well as drifting fragrance of fine foods.

The night in Zhai Lane, is a bustling and lively dialogue space between the tradition and modern times. The dazzling brightness of Zhai Lane cannot be concealed. Perhaps we may forget the surname of the home in the lane, cannot remember its past and are unable to speculate its future, but at the moment when we stay at Zhai Lane, we will always be shocked at its tradition and modern times, and always be intoxicated with the aesthetics of slowness.

Dawdling in the Kuan and Zhai Lanes, surrounding is the fencing wall decorated by lichen and bines, blushing bamboo chairs, exquisite window muntins, and dappled paint. The smooth stone steps go along the wall, a still tea cup on the wooden stool, the branches of the rattans are gently fumbling on the wall, leaves of the trees are little and green, a little cat is dozing off crouching beside the fish bowl, and the children are climbing trees for catching the cicadas, which are mellow and tranquil earthly life.

Dawdling in Kuan and Zhai Lanes, "as one yip from the dog of the east house falls, another from the west rises; the guests cross the kitchen for meals, and the chickens inhabit in the courtyard", the old folks are serenely chatting, while drinking their tea at the gate of the old tea house; a cat is lazily dozing off, crouching under the foot of an old man; mottled shadows are being cast by phoenix trees; a pair of thrushes are standing in a tree in the courtyard.

Dawdling in Kuan and Zhai Lanes, you can find that, a street is a city! Long and remote lane, mottled sunshine, fashionable and beautiful girls on the tricycle flash by, amorous feelings tenderly attachedthe streets of Kuan and Zhai Lanes, reflect the past and nowadays of the Shao City!
Dawdling in Kuan and Zhai Lanes, its past and nowadays are collected in the historical dust.
Echo (San Mao) and Yu Hua were faced smiling each other here.
